Muses on Coins

Melpomene is the muse of Tragedy. I spotted her here on an Antonine coin of Parium. She holds Perseus’ Harpa and a mask with a Phrygian Cap. The allusion is likely to the Euripides’ Andromeda.

Melpomene often dresses as a hero from the stage, but most typically she has the attributes of Hercules, as on the coins of Pomponius Musa (RRC 410).
