Double ‘Tails’; Double ‘Heads’

Any conversation about the ‘two reverses’ on the curule aedile issue of 58 BCE (CRRO 422/1a; see previous post), needs to also consider the design experimentation at the end of the same decade with ‘two obverse’ types.  For instance,

CRRO 433/2

CRRO 434/1

and CRRO 437/1a

And of course 434/2 is also a double reverse of sorts.

  1. And, of course, the issues of the (in)famous L. Appuleius Saturninus of c. 104 BC (a full generation earlier), Cr. 317/1, 2 and 3 (Roma/Roma, Roma/Saturn in quadriga and Saturn in quadriga/Saturn in quadriga.
