Still thinking about relative chronology

Mesagne closes in 58 BCE with RRC 422 an Aedile issue.

Yes I know I keep misspelling the hoard name. I’ll try to do better.

I finally figured out how to get CHRR to spit out a CSV file of useful data about a hoard’s contents.

  1. Select Quantitative Analysis instead of Content in the default view.
  2. Now under Select Categories for Analysis, select Coin Type
  3. Then choose “Count”
  4. Press the Calculate selected.
  5. Then under the chart will be a Download CSV option
  6. This file can now be opened in Excel and manipulated!

So after doing that I started annotating my RRC paper copy with coin counts from this hoard. Pencil of course.

What’s missing, obviously issues that are only aureii or only asses or only quinarii. Very little else in the post Sullan era.

421 Sufenas

420 Hypsaeus

418 Frugi (small issue, Cr. estimates under 22 reverse dies)

411 Torquatus (small issue, Cr. estimates under 11 reverse dies)

410 Musa (see last post)

405 Plaetorius

398 Rufus (small issue, Cr. reports 7 reverse dies)

397 Lentulus (small issue, Cr. reports 7 reverse dies)

396 Plaetorius (small issue, Cr. reports 15 reverse dies)

For context 391 Maxumus is present for types 2 [4 coins] and 3 [12 coins] but not type 1. Crawford saw 9 reverse dies of type one and estimated 22 for type two and 33 for type three.

So if we want to start from first principles what we know is that the follow are all after 58 BCE

421 Sufenas

420 Hypsaeus

410 Musa (see last post)

405 Plaetorius

And maybe in order of likelihood also:

418 Frugi (small issue, Cr. estimates under 22 reverse dies)

411 Torquatus (small issue, Cr. estimates under 11 reverse dies)

I mostly did campus/chairing this today. But I touched this work and it has been alive in my mind. I think I need to figure out my key questions so i know where to spend my last few precious hours of summer. Probably not working tomorrow but rather spending time with kiddos and trading my Friday for a Saturday or Sunday…
